    Don’t suppose you could do some more pictures of current progress? – to show how you’re rebuilding the turntable structure?

    @RjbsNXT
    Well, I’m working on a larger, wider one, with multiple rollers around. It is possible that it will be ready this week. And it is very likely there will be a surprise for you this week 🙂

  8. RjbsNXT
    October 4th, 2009 at 17:25 | #8

    @Sariel
    what ideas do you have to make a more stable turntable? , and i cant wait to see it 🙂

  9. Sariel
    October 3rd, 2009 at 08:49 | #9

    @RjbsNXT
    I didn’t think about elevators. I suppose it can be finished in like 3 or 4 weeks, no less. I need some time to develop a stable turntable for it, and I’ve ordered some extra parts that I have to wait for to be delivered.

  10. RjbsNXT
    October 2nd, 2009 at 22:28 | #10

    when do you think the bucket wheel will be finished?
    and are there going to be elevators throughout?

  11. Sariel
    September 30th, 2009 at 00:19 | #11

    @Isaac
    Torque is not a problem – stability is.

  12. Isaac
    September 30th, 2009 at 00:02 | #12

    I have an idea for your turntable. Use two worm gears with two XL motors to move the big turntable gear. It will make a good amount of torque for a big model, and maybe it will work.

    hey can you make a video with un finished excavator… it would be cool

  21. Sariel
    September 22nd, 2009 at 09:23 | #21

    @sverre
    Yes, I got it stiff enough and I lifted the front jib up and drove the excavator a little bit. It works fine, but the turntable is clearly overloaded. I have to make it stronger somehow.

  22. sverre

  36. Sariel
    September 8th, 2009 at 16:03 | #36

    @Alex
    Less than 5 kg, I suppose. The superstructure will be made mainly of truss. I’m going to test-drive the chassis with a load up to 4 kg.

  37. Alex
    September 8th, 2009 at 15:47 | #37

    How much do yuo think could weight the Excavator when completed? How much weight do you recognize this chassis structure with this gear ratio and 1 PF XL motor could handle max? Thanks for your opinion

    I am amazed by how quick you are in developing projects. I personally find hard during the construction process leaving an idea when I see it doesn’t work for another .. you know what I mean? I think you are very good and quick in that. You should apply for a management position in TLG 🙂

  45. Sariel

    @Alex
    You are right – I won’t. To attempt to build an amphibious TT vehicle would be to ask for insanity to come 🙂

  46. Alex
    September 2nd, 2009 at 19:44 | #46

    How are you going to make the Alvis TT “amphibious”? I can’t believe you will make a floating TT that can actually float and make a TT race ?!

  47. Sariel
    September 2nd, 2009 at 17:54 | #47

    @legobuilder
    No, unfortunately absolutely not. It would be rally hard to make a relatively small model at weight between 1.5 and 2 kilograms float with all these wheels and stuff.

  48. legobuilder
    September 2nd, 2009 at 16:58 | #48

    @Sariel
    ok I can’t wait to see it but can it float?

  49. Sariel
    September 1st, 2009 at 13:36 | #49

    @legobuilder
    I will probably finish Alvis this week, it’s supposed to participate in a race on Saturday. So I will most likely publish it shortly after.

  50. legobuilder
    September 1st, 2009 at 12:41 | #50

  53. Sariel
    August 26th, 2009 at 16:08 | #53

    @Boris
    Exactly. I will build a turntable similar to the one I used in a tower crane.

  54. Boris
    August 26th, 2009 at 16:05 | #54

    I would suggest using the Hailfire Droid wheels as the turntable, but I assume that you have only 2, and they’re already in use?

  55. Sariel
    August 19th, 2009 at 20:21 | #55

    @Sebastian
    The airtank, of course. It’s made specifically to store compressed air. Anyway, keep in mind that Lego pneumatics can compress air to 4 psi and no more. And I don’t think vaseline is good for bricks, perhaps a sealing foil + a Scotch tape would work better.

  56. Sebastian
    August 19th, 2009 at 14:44 | #56

    Hello!
    yesterday, while on the loo, did I begin to think about how to build a submarine entirely in lego…
    The main issue is the water. But I’am going to solve that problem with plastic bags and vaseline 😀
    but then i started to think about the “submerge” systems. And I realize that I will need some place to store the compressed air…
    Any suggestions?

  58. Sariel
    August 14th, 2009 at 10:46 | #58

    @manne
    Then why don’t you just go to Brickshelf and search for trial trucks? There are dozens of them there, many shown in detail, and it’s probably the best place to search in, much better than anything I could provide.

  59. manne
    August 14th, 2009 at 10:42 | #59

    @Sariel
    Ok but still,so i get a start in trtr.

  60. Sariel
    August 12th, 2009 at 14:18 | #60

    @manne
    I’ve been trying to make a really good TrTr suspension for the last whole year. There is no point in making instructions, because there is no single type of suspension good for all sorts of obstacles, and besides you never really stop building in TrTr – you just keep improving. That’s the problem, there are no ultimate TrTr vehicles, and the truck that was good a year ago would stand no chance today.

    @Sariel

    i can imagine how a module with drive, steering, and live axle suspension would be difficult to even build, and much more difficult to make reliable. oh well 🙂

    btw: i got the off roader, and how understand the drive/steering/independent suspension unit works. thanks for the pointers…

    I does look challenging, no doubt about it, I’m just afraid that a lot of people would mistake it for the 8264 set. You know, I still have to tell people that my Tow Truck has nothing to do with the 8285 set.

  84. OlSom
    May 14th, 2009 at 17:35 | #84

    If you are looking for some new construction equipment to build, i’d really love a 6×6 articulated dump truck, like

    http://img.directindustry.com/images_di/photo-g/articulated-dump-truck-42116.jpg

    That would be challenging enough to you to build (i guess) with full funcionality.
    I hope you like the idea!

    cant u build a LMC snowcat like this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/LMC-1200.jpg that woud be cool. Gear it down so it is realy strong and can handle hard train or how its spelled:) put some connectorpins in the holes in the treads so it gets more grip. Thanks

  87. May 5th, 2009 at 14:06 | #87

    Great works,gratulations. For the parts you are lucky cause you have Allegro under your hands. Maybe you don’t want used parts but from my respect Allegro is a big treasure.

  88. Sariel
    April 12th, 2009 at 23:14 | #88

    @Murcielago53
    You’re right, they’re cheaper, approx. $120 for a brand new one both at Bricklink and eBay. But this is still more $ than just the wheels and the wishbones would take. And one more thing – I don’t like the idea of buying 1246 parts just to get the 20 parts I need. It may sound choosy of me, but it means 1226 needless parts cluttering up my workbench. And I don’t really have much space left to build (plus shipping the entire set in the original box would be several times more expensive).

  89. Murcielago53
    April 12th, 2009 at 21:57 | #89

    @Sariel
    wouldn’t a 8674 set work best? They are easier to come by so they must be cheaper and it is based of the 8458 set.

  90. Sariel
    April 11th, 2009 at 20:59 | #90

    @Dornbi
    Good for you, but at Bricklink it currently takes $125, and even more at eBay. This is more than the wishbones and wheels would take, and the set is really rare, making it hard to buy a second-hand one somewhere else.

  91. April 11th, 2009 at 20:52 | #91

    Sariel, why don’t you buy a second hand 8458 set? That would get you the F1 wheels and the wishbones. I bought mine for less than the sum of your estimates.
